The Experience that Counts!

· Mary is a third generation resident of the Historic Stonehurst community. She was  a founder of the committee that pushed for the council action that created the Second Historic District in the San Fernando Valley.  The Stonehurst HPOZ now protects the unique “Stone Craftsman” style architecture of  north-east San Fernando Valley.

· For 25 years Mary has been a Small Business Owner. Walbert Enterprises is a small Information Technology firm that provides software support for specialty Unix/Linux  programs for large manufacturing and distributing companies.  Mary has seen first hand that recent policies have been pushing these companies out of Los Angeles. Mary wants a return to manufacturing in Los Angeles. Manufacturing and production are the true powerhouses of any economy.

· Mary was a founding member of the Foothill Trails District Neighborhood Council. Mary has served on the executive board of both the Foothill Trails District and the Sun Valley Area Neighborhood Council, as treasurer and vice-president respectively.

· Mary Benson is a founding member of the Los Angeles Horse Council.

· Mary Benson has worked with the non-profit group Valley View Vaulters since 1992. This group works with both handicapped and non-handicapped alike, and is unique in its scope and mission.

· Mary is the Founder and CEO of the Los Angeles Trails Project, which is part of the National Heritage Foundation. Through this Mary has worked towards completing the “Rim of the Valley Trail” and in 2009 was awarded a National Park Service Technical Assistance grant to help complete that project.

· Mary is a member of the Upper Los Angeles River Integrated Regional Water Management Plan (IRWMP) Steering Committee, which has worked to create local water sources, instead of buying water from Northern California. If Los Angeles would use and tap local watersheds we would reduce our chances of ever having a “water crisis”. Mary wants to push for citizen oversight of the highly secretive LADWP.

· Mary is on the California Trails Common Ground Committee, a state wide organization working to create a set of trail use policy recommendations for public agencies that would serve to resolve conflicts and achieve safe, environmentally sustainable, high quality experiences for all users.
